What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy consists of meetings with a psychotherapist also known as a licensed professional counselor, or licensed clinical social worker, in order to help individuals or groups of individuals to identify problem areas and help them learn new behaviors.  This encourages positive relationships and offers techniques to cope with everyday stressors.

Types of Therapy

What is psychotherapy?Individual Therapy: These are meetings with a therapist one on one. These meetings focus on personal difficulties that require more time to discuss. These issues could include individual feelings of anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, or other related disorders.

Family Therapy: Focuses on the family system as a whole. During family therapy, individuals within a family come together to explore ways to live together and create healthy connections. This includes creating a safe environment where members of the family can each feel heard and respected. Healthy communication among family members is central.

Play Therapy: Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of children (Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002; O'Connor & Schaefer, 1983). In play therapy, toys are like the child's words, and play is the child's language (Landreth, 2002). Many concrete objects (toys, art, etc.) are used in play therapy to assist children in exploring their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through the act of play, children "…learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem solving skills, and learn new ways of relating" (APT). Play therapy builds on the natural way children learn about themselves and their relationships in the world (Axline, 1947; Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002). The most troubling problems can be confronted and lasting resolutions can be discovered, rehearsed, mastered and become lifelong strategies (Russ, 2004). Play therapy is effective for many issues, including anger management, anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief, loss, self-esteem, family dissolution, autism, behavior problems, etc.

Group Therapy: Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a small, carefully selected group of individuals meets regularly with a therapist. The purpose of group therapy is to assist each individual in emotional growth and personal problem solving. The objective of group therapy is to increase self awareness, increase social comfort, allow exploration of new behaviors, provide support, develop skills, and promote more genuine interactions with others.
