Atlanta Child Therapy and Counseling
We serve children ages 4 year old through 12. These are meetings with a therapist one on one. These meetings focus on personal difficulties that require more time to discuss and work through. These issues could include individual feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, behavioral difficulties, understanding a diagnosis such as ADHD, OCD, or other related disorders and ways to cope. We use all types of techniques to reach children and help them change, accept or feel more confident about their abilities.
Child Psychotherapy is the creation of a therapeutic relationship which is almost solely focused on the emotional, social and behavioral well-being of the child.
FOCUS OF TREATMENT
Our goal is to help children develop a strong sense of self, emotional strength, positive relationships and good communication.
The language of child therapy is largely non-verbal. We use activities, structured or unstructured play, games and relationship to communicate with children. Children can’t always translate actions into words, or feelings into words, so we assist them by using other mediums.
Our first goal is to create a safe, supportive and trusting environment for a child to express themselves. Once this trusting relationship is built with a therapist, the exploration of the true self can begin. This exploration happens because of the therapist’s ability to create a therapeutic space in which growth and introspection are welcomed and demonstrated. We are guides through the confusing territory of emotion and development.
Aside from the relief of symptoms, child therapy works on the following five goals:
- Build Self Esteem
- Help Improve Communication
- Stimulate Development
- Build an Emotional Repertoire
- Improve the Emotional Vocabulary
